Study of pressure pulsations in a Francis turbine designed for frequent start-stop

VANELESS SPACE: Signature of fundamental frequency pressure pulsations is distinct at different loading case. The signature of second harmonic of rotor stator interaction frequency was also distinct from that of fundamental frequency.

Time-dependent inception of vortex rings in a Francis turbine during load variation: Large eddy simulation and experimental validation

JOURNAL OF HYDRAULIC RESEARCH

LES showed distinctive flow characteristics in the turbine. During closing of the guide vanes, strong boundary layer separation occurs from the upper camber of the stay vanes. Consequently, large vortices develop in the guide vane passages, which momentarily create a blockade and cause asymmetric loading on the guide vane walls.

The study showed the large part of the turbine was cavitating intensely, including stay vane and guide vane passages. From the present work, it appears that the cavitation become intense while crossing the threshold value of rotational speed.
